3D printed Stalker Badges

Post by jtmineha on Thu Aug 06, 2015 5:24 pm

I've been working on making the new "stalker cat" logo into an automotive style badge for the hood of the Stalker.
Right now, I have a 3D-printable badge available from Shapeways (an on-demand 3D printing service).
I have printed a test prototype from my printer at work and have put an order in for a 3D printed metal version.
I have used Shapeways for plastic parts before, but this is the first time I have ordered a metal print. They do a lot of jewelry type designs, so I figure the quality should be as shown in some of the other product photos.
I'll keep you guys up to date when I get the part in (takes about 3-4 weeks for a metal part). I ordered the "Polished Grey Steel" material.
If you want to take a look at the part or order one you can follow the link:
https://www.shapeways.com/product/U99F7MGTK/stalker-cat-badge-hood-curved

If you are interested in ordering one and have questions about them, just let me know. I'll post some pictures up later with my prototype part.
the plastic ones start at $15, metal ones start at $45. I would probably hold off until I get my sample at the end of the month, so I can be more familiar with the quality of the metal part, but if you are feeling adventurous, you can go ahead and order one.

Shapeways does have some higher end materials and finishes available that they use for jewelry, but I don't have them turned on.  If you want a real 14K gold plated/polished or Rhodium (looks like a silver or chrome) plated and polished version, we can make that happen! The high end finishes would start around $180 and go up (At the highest end, the solid platinum version would be around $12,000!).

I got the first metal 3D printed part from Shapeways today!
The metal feels really durable, and has some weight to it. It definitely looks and feels like metal. Even magnets will stick to it. The material I ordered is their "Polished Grey Steel".
Here are some links to some high-res photos so you can see the detail in the final printed part (let me know if there is any issue with the links):

As you can see from the photos, there is some "stepping" similar to a tool path on a CNC part where the surface is curved. I don't mind it too much, but I am curious to see if it can be sanded/polished to be perfectly smooth without loosing the color of the part. I'm not sure if the color is just a top coat finish or if it goes all the way through. I'm going to try to sand/polish the back surface and see what happens.

My Plan to attach it to the car is to use 3M double-sided tape. The "VHB" tape I have at work (or "Very High Bond") is very thin and works as the name suggests. I'm almost worried it is too strong though, so I may try to get the more automotive specific tape like their molding and emblem tape. I'll cut the tape to fit the back surfaces and it should just stick right on.
